Calculate Your BMR

Your BMR

Basal Metabolic Rate

This is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest (sleeping, breathing, heartbeat, etc.).

How BMR is calculated

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is the most accurate BMR formula for modern populations.

Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161

Your BMR is the minimum calories needed to keep you alive. To find total daily calories, multiply BMR by your activity level (1.2 for sedentary, up to 1.9 for very active).

FAQs

What is BMR?

BMR is Basal Metabolic Rate – the calories your body needs just to stay alive (breathing, heartbeat, cell production).

Is BMR the same as TDEE?

No. BMR is calories at rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) includes all activities and is higher.

Why do men have higher BMR?

Men typically have more muscle mass, which burns more calories than fat tissue.

Does BMR change with age?

Yes, BMR decreases about 2% per decade after age 20 due to muscle loss.

How can I increase my BMR?

Build muscle through strength training, eat enough protein, stay hydrated, and get good sleep.
